Journal, 1832-1833.

Record of George M. Hooe's journey from his home in Fredericksburg, Va. to join the crew of the CONSTELLATION, and his service aboard her as 2nd Sailing Master (later promoted to 1st Sailing Master) during her cruise of the Mediterranean. The majority of the entries focus on visits to ports such as Naples, Athens, and Port Mahon, with detailed descriptions of the cities and countryside. Another focus of his entries is the conduct of the ship's unpopular Captain George Campbell Read. Hooe relates details of a court martial Read brought against Lieutenants Samuel Lecompte and A.J.D. Browne, Sailing Master William H. Noland and Midshipman J.H. Robertson. A long description of the court martial and the events leading to it make up the central part of the journal, with personal remarks throughout.
